How this calculator works

This calculator runs in the opposite direction from our Sleep Calculator. You tell it when you are going to bed; it tells you the alarm times that land near the end of a sleep cycle rather than in the middle of one.

It adds roughly 14 minutes for falling asleep, then works forward in 90-minute blocks. The 90-minute figure is a planning convention. Actual cycles run closer to 80 to 100 minutes and vary between people and across the night (NHLBI), so these times are a starting point to test rather than a precise prediction.

Why you get several times, not one

Each option is one more full cycle. The later options give you more sleep; the earlier ones give you less but still aim to avoid waking mid-cycle.

Sleep need is individual. For adults aged 18 to 60, the CDC's guidance is 7 or more hours per night (CDC). Use that as the floor when choosing between the options rather than picking the earliest one that fits your morning.

When the times don't seem to work

Cycle timing is only one factor in how rested you feel. Sleep quality, total hours, an accumulated sleep deficit, alcohol, illness and an irregular schedule all matter, sometimes more.

If you are consistently waking unrefreshed despite giving yourself enough time to sleep, cycle timing is unlikely to be the explanation. That pattern is worth discussing with a healthcare professional.

Common questions

Why 14 minutes?

It is a rounded average for how long it takes to fall asleep. Yours may be shorter or longer. If you consistently fall asleep faster or slower, adjust the alarm accordingly.

What if none of the times fit my morning?

Take the closest one. Waking a little off a cycle boundary is a minor factor compared with getting enough total sleep.

Should I use this every night?

A consistent bedtime and wake time tends to matter more than optimising any single night (CDC).
